The inaugural 2022 UK Open Pool Championship at London’s Copper Box Arena delivered a successful debut tournament, with German player Joshua Filler winning the title by defeating Spain’s Francisco Sánchez Ruíz 13-7 in the final. The victory marked Filler’s second title in as many weeks.

Filler, known as The Killer, won the lag and took the opening rack. He won racks two and three with break-and-runs to lead 3-0 within 15 minutes. However, Sánchez Ruíz, known as El Ferrari, mounted a comeback after Filler missed a jump shot on the seven ball in the fourth rack.

Sánchez Ruíz won three consecutive racks to level at 3-3 and take a 4-3 lead. He extended his advantage to 5-3 in the eighth rack. During this stretch, Sánchez Ruíz executed a bank shot on the five ball that drew crowd reaction.

The ninth rack featured a technical safety battle between the two players, with both hiding the cue ball multiple times around the two ball. Filler’s strong safety play proved decisive, forcing errors from Sánchez Ruíz and allowing him to regain control. Filler pulled away to win 13-7, adding the championship to his résumé that includes World Championships in nine-ball and eight-ball, plus three Mosconi Cup MVP awards.

The tournament established itself as a successful debut event through the quality of play and its broadcast reach, airing live on Sky Sports in the UK and streaming across multiple platforms internationally, securing the UK Open’s place on the professional pool calendar.
