The 2021 World Pool Masters featured Greece’s Alexander Kazabooboo Kazakis defeating Shane Van Boening with a 9-0 shutout at Europa Sports Park in Gibraltar. The 9-0 margin was the largest defeat in a Masters final and the first clean sweep in the event’s 27-year history.

For Kazakis, this victory provided redemption. Two years earlier, the Greek player had lost the 2019 final to David Alcaide after leading 5-0 and 8-5, with Alcaide winning the final frame. In this final, Kazakis won every frame against the American two-time Masters champion, who had won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.

Kazakis reached the final by winning a 7-6 semi-final match against Eklent Kaci. The close semi-final appeared to help Kazakis prepare mentally for the championship match, as he entered the final feeling confident.

Van Boening reached the final through a 7-6 semi-final victory over rising German star Joshua Filler, but the two-time Masters champion was unable to keep pace in the championship match. The American struggled to match Kazakis’s consistent 9-ball play.

The victory marked a career-defining moment for the Athens native, who had reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Nine-ball Championship and established himself as one of Europe’s premier players. Defending champion David Alcaide fell in his opening match to Skyler Woodward, leaving the tournament wide open. Kazakis won the title with a dominant performance in one of the most one-sided finals in World Pool Masters history.
