The 2021 U.S. Open Pool Championship took place at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City from September 13-18. Carlo The Black Tiger Biado won the title, defeating Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp 13-8 in the final to claim the $50,000 winner’s share of the $300,000 prize fund. Biado became the third Filipino player to win America’s most prestigious 9-ball championship.

The tournament featured world-class talent from around the globe. Defending champion Joshua Filler of Germany, who won in 2019, did not advance far in the competition. Filler lost 4-11 to Yapp and 3-11 to Poland’s Mieszko Fortuński. American players Shane Van Boening and Alex Pagulayan also did not reach the final stages. Pagulayan had won the U.S. Open in 2005, becoming the first Filipino champion.

Biado, 37, is a World 9-Ball Champion from 2017. In the final match against Yapp, Biado won 13-8. Yapp had performed well throughout the tournament, including his victory over defending champion Filler.

Biado’s victory placed him alongside Efren Bata Reyes (1994) and Pagulayan as the only Filipino players to win the U.S. Open. The championship is pool’s longest-running major tournament, first won by Mike Sigel in 1976. Later in 2021, Biado won another international title in Abu Dhabi.
