Austrian Albin Ouschan won the International 9-Ball Open at Norfolk’s Sheraton Waterside Hotel, defeating Filipino Dennis Orcollo 13-6 in the final. Ouschan, known by the nickname Smooth Operator, completed the tournament without a loss and reached the WPA’s #1 ranking.
The tournament was held October 24-30, 2021, and used a double elimination format through the early rounds. The event started with 123 players (five no-shows) and was narrowed to 32 survivors—16 from the winners’ bracket and 16 from the one-loss bracket. From that point, a random draw created single-elimination matches between players from opposite brackets, with streaming coverage provided by Accu-Stats.
Ouschan defeated American Shane Van Boening in the semifinals. Van Boening finished tied for third place alongside James Aranas. The final was played on Diamond 9-foot tables under television lights, with Ouschan winning 13-6 over Orcollo.
Orcollo finished as runner-up in the event. This was his second major final appearance in 2021.
The victory added $30,000 to Ouschan’s earnings. Earlier in 2021, Ouschan had also won his second WPA World Nine-ball Championship. The International Open title secured his position at the top of the world rankings at age 31.
