David Alcaide won his second World Pool Masters title, defeating Alexander Kazakis 9-8 in Gibraltar. The Spanish player recovered from deficits of 0-5 and 5-8 against the Greek competitor to claim the championship.
The 2019 tournament expanded from 16 to 24 players and featured a $100,000 prize fund. Alcaide defeated defending champion Niels Feijen in the opening round, then won 8-3 against Eklent Kaci in the semifinals. Kazakis advanced to the final with an 8-1 semifinal win over Skyler Woodward.
In the final rack, Alcaide's break left him out of position. He attempted to move around the five ball but failed, and Kazakis took control. Kazakis worked down to the 8 and 9 balls but miscued his position shot after pocketing the 8, leaving himself with a difficult bank shot or safety play.
Kazakis played a safety, leaving the cue ball and 9-ball at opposite ends of the table. Alcaide responded with a full-table bank shot on the 9-ball to win the match and clinch the title.
The victory was Alcaide's second World Pool Masters championship, his first coming in 2017. Kazakis would return to win the title in 2021.
