Ko Pin-yi of Taiwan won the 2018 China Open 9-Ball Championship, defeating Scotland’s Jayson Shaw in the final. The victory added to Ko’s collection of prestigious titles as a former world number one.

Ko’s win in Shanghai came during a period of sustained success in elite tournaments. In 2015, Ko won three world titles in a single calendar year: the WPA World Nine-ball Championship, World Ten-ball Championship, and the World Cup of Pool alongside partner Chang Yu-lung. That year earned him Billiard Digest’s Player of the Year honors.

The final featured two of professional pool’s top players. Ko defeated Shaw to claim the China Open title.

The China Open is a flagship WPA event offering substantial prize money, with the men’s champion earning $40,000. The tournament format uses double-elimination play in races to nine, then transitions to single-elimination races to 11 for the final 32 players, creating a challenging competition that tests both consistency and performance under pressure.

Ko’s victory reinforced his standing among the world’s top players and added to his legacy as one of Taiwan’s leading pool ambassadors. The China Open regularly attracts elite players from around the world to Shanghai for one of the most competitive fields in professional pool.
