Spain’s David "El Matador" Alcaide won his first World Pool Masters title at Gibraltar’s Victoria Stadium, defeating Scotland’s Jayson Shaw 8-7 in the final.
Alcaide advanced through the tournament by defeating former world champions Ralf Souquet and Shane Van Boening. In the semifinals, he faced Austria’s Albin Ouschan, winning 8-6 to reach the final.
Shaw also reached the final with strong performances. In the quarterfinals, Alex Pagulayan failed to convert a crucial 9-ball at hill-hill, allowing Shaw to advance. Shaw then defeated Taiwan’s Chang Jung-Lin 8-3 in the semifinals.
The final was contested in the race-to-8 format, with play going back and forth between the two competitors. Alcaide captured the $20,000 winner’s prize and received the trophy from Gibraltar’s Minister of Sport, The Hon Steven Linares. He won the World Pool Masters again in 2019, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top 9-ball players.
