The 2017 China Open 9-Ball Championship in Shanghai saw 19-year-old German Joshua Filler claim his first major WPA title with a victory over Taiwan’s Chang Jung-lin. Filler became the youngest player ever to win the China Open championship.

In the semifinals, Chang advanced 11-2 while Filler won 11-3, setting up a final matchup between the experienced Chang and the teenage German competing in his first appearance at the sport’s highest level.

Filler defeated Chang 11-6 in the final. At age 19, Filler demonstrated his ability to compete against more experienced opponents.

This victory marked the start of a successful career trajectory for Filler. In 2018, he won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship, and by 2019, he had reached world number one ranking. His 2017 China Open title also earned him selection to the European Mosconi Cup team that year at age 20, making him the youngest player in the event’s history.

The tournament drew elite competition from over 30 countries, with defending champions Wu Jiaqing and Han Yu representing the host nation.
