Shane Van Boening won his fifth U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship title with a 13-6 victory over Taiwan’s Chang Jung-lin at the 2016 tournament held at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel from October 16-22. This tied the all-time record held by legendary Earl Strickland.
Van Boening competed in the double-elimination format across a 256-player field. He won every match throughout the tournament. The tournament used a race-to-11 format under winner break rules.
In the final, Van Boening defeated Chang Jung-lin with a final score of 13-6.
This was Van Boening’s second U.S. Open title in three years, following his 2014 championship. By winning five U.S. Open titles, Van Boening matched Strickland’s all-time record for the event.
Defending champion Kevin Cheng was eliminated in the early rounds after losses to Hsieh Chia-chen and Antonio Lining. Scotland’s Jayson Shaw finished in third place.
