The 2015 WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Doha saw Ko Pin-yi of Chinese Taipei defeat America’s Shane Van Boening 13-11 in the final at the al-Attiya Sports Arena, capturing his first world title.

Ko’s championship run included several notable outcomes. The defending champion, Niels Feijen, was eliminated in the preliminary rounds, and five former world champions fell during the early knockout stages. At 26 years old, Ko had previously won junior world titles in 2007 and 2008 before claiming the senior world championship.

The tournament structure featured 128 players competing in qualifying rounds before advancing to the main double elimination event. Asian nations showed strong representation throughout the competition, with the Philippines advancing five players to the knockout rounds, while China and Taiwan each advanced four players.

Ko’s victory over Van Boening was followed by additional achievements that year. He won the World 10-Ball Championship and teamed with Chang Yu-lung to win Taiwan’s first World Cup of Pool title. These accomplishments earned him Billiard Digest’s Player of the Year award.

The tournament was held in Doha, Qatar’s capital, which hosted the championship for the sixth consecutive year. Ko’s performance reflected the growing strength of Asian players in professional pool and Taiwan’s emergence as a competitive force in the sport.
