In Doha, Qatar, Japan’s Yukio Akakariyama won the 2011 WPA World Nine-ball Championship with a 13-11 victory over the Philippines’ Ronato Alcano. The tournament was held at the Al Sadd Sports Club from June 25 to July 1, with nearly 1,500 fans in attendance, mostly Filipino supporters.

Akakariyama’s triumph marked a historic milestone, making him the first Japanese world pool champion since Takahashi Kunihiko defeated Johnny Archer in 1998. The 36-year-old from Nagano entered the tournament after reaching the World Ten-ball Championship semifinals in Manila weeks earlier and placing fifth at the China Open in Shanghai. His path to the title was aided when defending champion Francisco Bustamante lost to Dennis Orcollo in the round of 32.

The final was competitive throughout. Both players shot well and made strong tactical decisions. Akakariyama stayed composed during key moments in the match, recovered from mistakes, and made crucial shots to win the championship.

Akakariyama’s victory was notable given his recent emergence at the highest level of professional pool. Three years prior, he finished ninth at the Japan Open. His previous World Championship appearances had ended early, with losses in the last 64 at both the 2009 World Ten-ball Championship and 2010 World Nine-ball Championship. This win demonstrated his rapid improvement and ability to compete against established international players.

Alcano’s runner-up finish reflected the Philippines’ continued presence at the world championship level. The result showed the competitive standard maintained by Filipino players in professional pool.
