The inaugural WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Championship in 2009 marked a historic moment for women’s professional pool. Held at the Sky Dome of SM North Edsa in Quezon City, Philippines, this $75,000 tournament brought together the world’s best players for what would become pool’s newest world championship discipline.

Rubilen Amit, known as Bingkay, won the tournament and became its first-ever champion, capturing her maiden world title on home soil in front of Filipino fans. The Mandaue, Cebu native lost 5-1 to world No. 1 Kelly Fisher of England in the opening day of group play. Amit won her next three matches to advance from Group 8 alongside Fisher and Singapore’s Charlene Chai.

The championship final featured Amit facing Taiwan’s Liu Shin-mei, a former World 9-Ball Champion who won that title in 1999. Liu had reached the semifinals of the 1996 World 9-Ball Championship. Amit defeated Liu in the final.

This triumph established Amit among pool’s elite players and as one of the sport’s most dominant forces. A three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and 2007 Women’s World 9-Ball Championship runner-up, Amit captured the 10-ball world title again in 2013, becoming the first woman to win the championship twice. Her victory also marked the beginning of Filipino dominance in women’s pool, inspiring a new generation of players from the Philippines.

The tournament established 10-ball as a premier women’s championship format. While the men’s WPA World 10-Ball Championship had existed as an open event, the creation of a dedicated women’s championship provided female players with another prestigious platform. The event’s financial backing and professional presentation set a standard for women’s pool tournaments, though the championship experienced scheduling challenges, including a nine-year hiatus before being revived in 2022.
