The 2009 World Pool Masters saw English player Darren "Dynamite" Appleton win his first major invitational title, defeating Netherlands player Nick van den Berg in the final. This victory came one year after Appleton won the inaugural WPA World Ten-ball Championship.
Appleton reached the Las Vegas final after competing through qualifying rounds. The Pontefract native began playing pool at age 12 and was world No. 1 in English 8-ball before transitioning to American pool in 2006.
