Team Europe defeated Team USA 12-9 at York Hall in Bethnal Green to win the 2002 Mosconi Cup. This victory ended Europe's winning drought since their 1995 win and followed a 12-1 loss to Team USA the previous year.
The European squad featured German stars Oliver Ortmann and Ralf Souquet, Finland's Mika Immonen, Sweden's Marcus Chamat, and the Netherlands' Nick van den Berg. Snooker legend Steve Davis also competed for Team Europe in the December 19-22 tournament. Davis considered the win a highlight of his career.
Team USA's roster included Georgia's Johnny Archer, Kentucky veteran Nick Varner, and North Carolina's Earl Strickland. The American squad also featured rising stars Jeremy Jones and Corey Deuel, the previous year's MVP. Korean-born Charlie Williams completed the Team USA lineup.
The tournament featured both individual and team matches, with doubles proving essential to Europe's success. In the opening session, Europe won all three doubles matches. Ortmann and Souquet defeated Archer and Varner 5-2, while Immonen and Chamat beat Deuel and Williams 5-1. Davis and van den Berg defeated Strickland and Jones 5-4.
This victory marked a significant shift in the transatlantic rivalry. The Americans had dominated the event's early years, making Europe's breakthrough particularly notable. The 2002 Mosconi Cup demonstrated emerging competitive balance in the competition.
