The 1998 Acclaim Mosconi Cup saw Team USA defeat Team Europe 13-9 at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, from December 17-20. The fifth edition of the team competition featured matches between the American and European squads.
Europe took a 2-1 lead after the first session. Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen defeated Johnny Archer and Nick Varner 7-5 in doubles, while Oliver Ortmann and Steve Knight beat Jim Rempe and Earl Strickland 7-6. Kim Davenport and Reed Pierce won the only American point in the opening session, defeating Fabio Petroni and Steve Davis 7-5.
The American team included Johnny Archer from Georgia, Earl Strickland, Nick Varner, and Kim Davenport. Team Europe featured snooker player Steve Davis alongside continental players Souquet, Immonen, and Ortmann.
USA won the remaining sessions to secure the overall victory. The American team overcame the early 2-1 deficit across the weekend to finish with a 13-9 winning margin.
The Mosconi Cup began in 1994 as a Sky Sports exhibition. By 1998, the tournament had grown into a major professional pool event, with team competition between USA and Europe taking place over a single weekend.
