The inaugural Mosconi Cup in December 1994 marked the beginning of pool’s premier international team competition. Staged at the Roller Bowl in Romford, England, this event brought together eight-player teams representing Europe and the United States in a nine-ball format.
Team USA won 16-12 in this four-day tournament. The American squad featured Lou Butera, Mark Wilson, Jeanette Lee, and Vivian Villarreal. Europe’s team included Jimmy White, Steve Davis, and Allison Fisher, along with Oliver Ortmann and Tom Storm. The mixed-gender format featured six men and two women per side.
On the opening day, Europe’s Tom Storm and Oliver Ortmann defeated Bobby Hunter and Mark Wilson. The Americans built momentum as the tournament progressed and secured the victory.
Sky Sports and Matchroom Sport organized the event as a team competition using a format based on golf’s Ryder Cup, including team rooms and captain’s picks. The European team’s roster included multiple snooker professionals, showing participation from both cue sports. Team USA’s victory at this event in England established early success in what would become a competitive rivalry.
The 1994 Mosconi Cup’s success led to a recurring annual event that continues today. The format has evolved—current teams feature five players competing for 11 points rather than the original 16-point format—but the core structure established in Romford remains. Team USA has maintained a 17-13 overall series lead, though Europe’s performance in the inaugural event indicated the rivalry would be closely contested in future years.
