Jean Balukas won the 1986 WPBA US Open 9-Ball Championship at age 26. Balukas had been named Billiards Digest Player of the Year five times and was a leading figure in women’s professional pool.

Balukas’s 1986 victory occurred between her straight pool world championships in 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, and 1983, and her nine-ball world title in 1988. She first gained public attention at age six during a pool exhibition at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal and became known for her work in advancing women’s participation in the sport.

The 1986 WPBA US Open was one of the premier tournaments on the women’s circuit. Balukas’s championship win established her as a dominant competitor in professional pool during a period of growing recognition for women’s professional play.

Throughout her career, Balukas worked to advance the sport for women. At the 1987 B.C. Open, she protested gender-specific dress codes. Her 1986 WPBA US Open championship demonstrated both her skill and her impact on women’s professional pool.

The championship was one of eventually over 100 tournament victories in Balukas’s career. She was inducted as the youngest player and second woman ever into the BCA Hall of Fame. Billiards Digest ranked her as the fifteenth greatest player of the 20th century.
