Jean Balukas won her fifth world title in straight pool at the 1983 WPBA World Straight Pool Championship. She captured straight pool world championships in 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, and 1983, establishing herself as the dominant player in 14.1 continuous during the early 1980s.
By 1983, Balukas had already established herself as a significant figure in professional pool. Five years earlier, she became the first woman to qualify for the men's division of the World Straight Pool Championship, an achievement that took place at New York City's Biltmore Hotel. Her 1983 triumph further solidified her position as a trailblazing athlete who competed at the highest levels of professional pool.
The championship came during the era when straight pool held its position as the most prestigious format in professional pool. Straight pool was invented in 1910 and remained the sport's premier tournament format until nine-ball eventually surpassed it in popularity during the late 20th century. Balukas's consecutive victories during this period represented elite achievement in what was considered pool's most demanding and skillful discipline.
This 1983 victory demonstrated Balukas's sustained excellence at the highest level of competition. She performed pool exhibitions starting at age six at Grand Central Terminal and developed into a champion capable of dominating professional competition year after year. Her consistent success in straight pool contributed to her recognition as a five-time Billiards Digest Player of the Year and her historic induction as the youngest member and second woman ever honored in the BCA Hall of Fame.
The win represented the culmination of Balukas's peak competitive period, as she went on to capture a nine-ball world championship in 1988. Her five straight pool world titles remain among her most notable achievements in professional pool.
