Jean Balukas won the 1983 Women’s US Open Straight Pool Championship, her fifth world championship title in straight pool. At 24 years old, Balukas was one of the most dominant players in the sport. Her 1983 victory came one year after winning the 1982 world championship. Billiard Digest later recognized her as the fifteenth greatest player of the 20th century. Balukas had gained attention as a child prodigy, performing at Grand Central Terminal at age six, and by 1983 had established herself as one of the sport’s elite competitors.
