Jean Balukas won her fourth world title in women’s straight pool at the 1982 WPBA World Straight Pool Championship. The 23-year-old from New York was the dominant player in women’s professional pool during the early 1980s.
By 1982, Balukas had built an impressive resume. In 1978, she became the first woman to qualify for the men’s division of the World Straight Pool Championship. She first gained public attention at age six during a Grand Central Terminal exhibition. Over her career, she was compared to tennis legend Billie Jean King for her impact on women’s sports.
Balukas had previously won world straight pool titles in 1977, 1978, and 1980. She excelled at pattern recognition and tactical play. The straight pool format, also called 14.1 continuous, requires both technical precision and strategic thinking—skills that defined her competitive style.
The 1982 championship was her fourth straight pool world title. She won another in 1983 and later added a nine-ball world title in 1988. Over her career, Balukas was named Billiards Digest Player of the Year five times and was ranked as the fifteenth greatest player of the 20th century.
During this era, Balukas’ success in straight pool helped maintain the discipline’s prominence in women’s professional competition. While nine-ball was beginning to gain popularity and would eventually dominate televised pool, her technical mastery kept straight pool as a significant event.
