Jean Balukas won her third World Straight Pool Championship title in 1980 at age 21, continuing her dominance in 14.1 continuous play. The New York native was building what would become a legendary career in the sport’s most prestigious discipline.
The 1980 victory was the middle title in Balukas’ five-title reign in straight pool world championships, spanning from 1977 to 1983. She won these titles through sustained success at the highest level of competition. Straight pool was the sport’s ultimate test of a complete player’s game.
Balukas’ achievements were groundbreaking for her era. In 1978, she became the first woman to qualify for both the men’s and women’s divisions of the World Straight Pool Championship. Balukas first drew attention at age six during a pool exhibition at Grand Central Terminal. She turned professional at age 10 in 1969, bringing over a decade of high-level experience to her championship runs by 1980.
