In 1977, 18-year-old Jean Balukas won her first WPBA World Straight Pool Championship. She had been playing pool competitively since childhood and had gained national attention through exhibitions and television appearances.
Balukas began playing pool at age six and performed exhibitions at New York City's Grand Central Terminal and appeared on primetime television shows including CBS's I've Got a Secret. By nine years old, she was competing against adults in tournaments. She turned professional in 1969 at age 10 and won her first world championship in 1977.
The straight pool format, also known as 14.1 continuous, was the most prestigious discipline in professional pool during the 1970s. The format requires players to call their shots and demonstrate superior cue ball control over extended racks. Balukas's 1977 championship victory in this format represented the sport's premier title for women.
Balukas won the World Straight Pool Championship five times: in 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, and 1983. Her success in straight pool established her as one of the greatest players of all time. Balukas also challenged traditional dress codes for women players and made technical innovations in the game.
In 1978, the year following her 1977 championship, Balukas became the first woman to qualify for the men's division of the World Straight Pool Championship. This competition took place at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. Her 1977 championship victory launched a legendary career in professional pool.
