The 1972 Women’s US Open Straight Pool Championship was a significant moment in billiards history, as Jean Balukas won her first major title at the age of 12. This BCA-sanctioned tournament featured the emerging talent of a player who would go on to become one of the greatest players in the sport.
Balukas had already established herself as a prodigy by 1972, having first captured public attention at age 6 during a pool exhibition at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. She eventually became a five-time Billiards Digest Player of the Year and earned induction into the BCA Hall of Fame as its youngest member and second woman honoree. She was ranked fifteenth on Billiards Digest’s Greatest Players of the 20th Century.
