Luther "Wimpy" Lassiter won the 1964 World Straight Pool Championship, defeating Arthur Cranfield in the final. The Elizabeth City, North Carolina native claimed his second world championship title, following his victory the previous year.

At 45 years old, Lassiter had turned professional in 1953 and advanced through the ranks during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The 1964 victory continued his success during the straight pool era.

The 1964 title was part of a dominant period for Lassiter in straight pool. Between 1963 and 1967, he won seven World Straight Pool Championships. During this time, the World Straight Pool Championship was the most prestigious tournament in professional pool.

The victory came during the era when straight pool was at its competitive peak, before nine-ball became the most prominent professional game. Lassiter won back-to-back championships in 1963 and 1964 during this period of American pocket billiards. He was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America's Hall of Fame in 1983 and ranked number 9 on Billiards Digest's list of the 50 Greatest Players of the Century.
