In 1937, Ralph Greenleaf won the World Straight Pool Championship, defeating Andrew Ponzi. This victory was one of his final championship wins and added to Greenleaf's record of nineteen world titles between 1919 and 1938.

The championship used the challenge match format typical of the era, with competitors playing 14.1 continuous pool. Championship matches often took place over several days, with players competing to relatively high point totals that sometimes reached 1,500 points.
