In 1919, a 19-year-old Ralph Greenleaf won his first World Straight Pool Championship, defeating Bennie Allen. This victory marked the beginning of his dominance in straight pool history.

The 1919 championship launched Greenleaf's career. Greenleaf had turned professional in 1916 and went on to win 19 world titles between 1919 and 1938. His victory over Allen came in the straight pool format, played under the 14.1 continuous rules that Jerome Keough invented in 1910, representing the evolution of professional pocket billiards.

Greenleaf mastered straight pool quickly. Championships of this era were demanding, often conducted as challenge matches played over several days to high point totals sometimes reaching 1,500 points. The mental stamina and consistency required separated top players from the greatest ones, and Greenleaf's victory showed he belonged among pool's elite.

This championship proved highly significant. The New York Times obituary published in 1950 compared Greenleaf's impact on pocket billiards to Babe Ruth's impact on baseball, Jack Dempsey's on fighting, and Bill Tilden's on tennis. The 1919 title was the foundation of that legacy. It established Greenleaf as the face of professional pool during an era when straight pool dominated cue sports, decades before nine-ball rose to prominence.

For Bennie Allen, the runner-up finish meant losing to a player who would become one of only three charter inductees into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1966. While Allen did not achieve the same historical recognition as Greenleaf, he competed in one of pool's most significant championship matches. Greenleaf's victory would influence future players including Willie Mosconi, who would eventually win 19 world titles as well.
